Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It has large frills on its head.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Flipping Frills is one of Phoenix's dragons. He was named for the large fins on his head which, while typical of his breed, are so big and floppy he could never hold them up straight. At hatching, they were most oversized, and he was always very top-heavy because of them -- he once fell headfirst into the lake while trying to take a drink, and had to be rescued by The Rain it Raineth Every Day.

Frills isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he is probably the most playful of Phoenix's hatchlings, and they all adore him for his funny-looking facial features. They like to play with and pull on his fins (probably stretching them out even more than they already are), but Frills doesn't mind. His best friend is Cherubim and Wheel, but he really prefers to be "friends with everyone," and is usually somewhat hurt when certain unsocial hatchlings give him the cold shoulder. Fortunately, he usually has enough other playmates that he doesn't become too obsessed over these things.
