Dorsal Dragons are so named because they have large fins along their backs that can be raised and lowered at will. They use these fins to regulate body temperature; they raise them to cool off when they become overheated. The bright colors on the fins double as a means of attracting mates.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Violet Bolt, better known as simply Violet, is inseparable from Scarlet Ray. Both their eggs mysteriously turned up at the entrance of a clan's cave, many years ago. The clan took in the two eggs (who they assumed to be sisters, even though their parentage cannot be proven) and raised them as if they were not adoptees but blood members of the clan. The two have lived their lives as one since birth. They are very talented fighters, acting together as a tag team in a fight.

Violet is the more aggressive of the two, and always charges in ahead of her sister in battle. She has a very direct, sharp and often harsh manner when speaking with other dragons. This is especially noticeable when she's in a temper, and the only thing stopping her from acting rashly is her sister, who somehow always manages to keep her in check.
