And look! It has grown much bigger! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Osaivi used to have a good friend, Aapea the Terrae hatchling, who was like a sister to her. The two were practically inseparable and would always be together, no matter what was happening around. However, one day, Aapea got lost under strange circumstances; she was never found. During that time, the cheerful and active Osaivi changed into a helpless lost daydreamer. Even now, she will sit alone and stare up at the sky, rather than go to play with other hatchlings, and she will seek the company of adults rather than ones of her age.
