Dragons are creatures with nearly unlimited life spans. They can survive for long periods of time, and no one has found a dragon that has died of old age. Adolescence is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Once they hit adolescence, hatchlings change quickly, maturing to their full forms in only 2 years.
Dragons don’t communicate with each other verbally, but they will growl to scare off predators and frighten prey. Young dragons will emit an extremely high-pitched squeal when they are frightened. To communicate, they use telepathy with each other and to speak to other creatures.
It was previously believed that purple dragons were exclusively female, but this is not the case. Recent environmental shifts have revealed the existence of both genders of this breed. Female behavior is well known; they are primarily herbivores but will eat meat during mating season. On the other hand, very little is known about the behavior and habits of male purple dragons.
Summer-Sky, named for her love of staring up at the sky on clear summer days, is an extremely placid and caring dragon. She was the first of LauraM's dragons to mature and is considered to be the matriarch of the cave, and cares for both the abandoned eggs and hatchlings as well as giving guidance to the other adult dragons. Now happily mated to Airgead with children of her own, they rule the cave together and try to maintain a peaceful environment, though this is not always easy!
