Dragons are creatures with nearly unlimited life spans. They can survive for long periods of time, and no one has found a dragon that has died of old age. Adolescence is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Once they hit adolescence, hatchlings change quickly, maturing to their full forms in only 2 years.
Dragons don’t communicate with each other verbally, but they will growl to scare off predators and frighten prey. Young dragons will emit an extremely high-pitched squeal when they are frightened. To communicate, they use telepathy with each other and to speak to other creatures.
Balloon dragons are so named because they are filled with a gas that makes them almost lighter than air, similar to balloons. However, they are not prone to bursting, as they are covered in tough skin and can deflate themselves if necessary. In addition, they generally are slow moving. They use their gas bladders to float to the tops of trees, where food is more abundant. They can shift their weight from their backs to their fronts, allowing them to reach leaves and fruit.
High Floater is the most childish member of Shield Tail and Dark Drakon's dragon herd. He is frequently found with the herd's hatchlings, performing crazy antics in order to entertain them. Unfortunately, these antics often get the hatchlings overexcited, which makes it difficult for them to get to sleep at night. This has earned the Balloon dragon the reputation of 'the herd's clown'. However, while High Floater has a tendency to be goofy and immature, even he knows when it's time to be serious and will always help protect the herd's hatchlings from humans who try to capture or harm them. High Floater also harbors genuine feelings for his fellow dragon, Lore Wing. Sadly, while she is likewise charmed by his goofy nature, Lore Wing is not aware that their feelings are mutual.
