What they lack in size and strength, Tatterdrakes make up for in aggression and ferocity. Any perceived threat is seen as a challenge and met with complete hostility; fights for territory are so commonplace that many older Tatterdrakes possess wings so ripped from fighting that they can no longer fly. Tatterdrakes are exclusively solitary except when they are seeking mates, for which they also clash.

Though it may appear at first that dragons and drakes have much in common, the two are completely separate species. Drakes are smaller and less intelligent than their cousin species, though both dragons and drakes sit comfortably near the top of the food chain. They are always found bearing antlers and leathery wings. Drakes share many of the same habitats that dragons do, and typically hunt in packs.

The tatterdrake originally known as MM once wandered into a candy shop where the owner had jars and jars of tiny chocolates with coloured, sugary coatings, all sorted separately by what had been used to tin the sugary exterior. In trying to get at a jar of gummy candies that looked more tempting to her, MMmix knocked over these jars of candy bits and made a huge, polychromatic pile of them in the middle of the floor. MM ate too much candy and fell asleep in the middle of the shop, leaving no doubt as to who made the mess. The shop owner was devastated to find all his carefully-made candies all mixed together, but the children who came by early enough to see the mess got excited by the prospect of eating the exciting mix of candy. Kids all over town started asking for candy mixed together like when the drake got into the candy shop. Soon, everyone was asking for "MM's mix" and, not long after, the drake herself was called MMmix in honour of the great big mess that made her famous.
