Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Lake Laogai is one of many dragons living in a large but secluded alpine network ruled by a king. There is not a conspiracy to overthrow that king. There is not an evil secretariat and a bunch of his agents covering up a long-running war outside the network borders. And that secretariat and his agents absolutely do not capture people who oppose them and interrogate and brainwash them in a series of secret caverns. Lake Laogai developed her potent and unusual toxin early, though her barbs are still tiny. She accompanies the "counselors" in the caves and is tasked with jabbing misfits and criminals and other unsavory types who disturb the peace in the kingdom. It is said that if the Earth King invites you to Lake Laogai, you should be honored and accept the invitation.
