Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. Icicles keep forming on its body, but it doesn’t seem to be bothered by the cold.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Like so many younglings her age, Frostflare is a clumsy hatchling. Her wings, not yet fully formed, give her the courage to attempt but no means to accomplish flight, and she instead tumbles end over end from the tops of glaciers and snowbanks. Not fully coordinated, it is as if she at times forgets what sort of being she is, for she'll slip on ice formed by the chill of her own body and unconsciously freeze the streams she drinks from. As it is dangerous for other hatchlings to play with her because of her mindlessness, Frostflare is confined to only playing with others of her kind.
