Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. Its eyes glow brightly at night, and it enjoys attacking insects and small animals.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

The Shadow in the Corner is one of Phoenix's dragons. A sullen and emotionally cold hatchling, Corner is true to his name, and spends most of his time alone. Adorable at first glance, he will soon turn away any kind of warmth and kill all thoughts of companionship. He shrinks from committing himself to friendship, and as for the few friendships he does have, such as those with Small Haunting Beast and Arrowed Tail, he is careful to keep them superficial. He doesn't like crowds and loud noises, and usually lurks well out of sight, under tables or around corners. Corner usually prefers to be awake at night, practicing stealth as he flits from shadow to stretching shadow. He has frightened many a late-night snacker or hatchling that couldn't get to sleep.
