Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Named in honour of one of Firerubynat's favourite Go players, Toya Akira is the current head doctor, though rumor has it that he will soon pass on the mantle to his prodigy son. He is generally a pacifist, preferring to settle disputes with logical debates and diplomatic words; the only time he ever loses his temper is when dealing with his rival, Shindou, who "frankly has the ability to incur even the wrath of a saint". Unfortunately for everyone else, the two meet every evening to play mental games, and frequently conclude their time spent together with a telepathic shouting match that can be heard a mountain away. Fortunately for the preservation of the other dragons' mental hearing, his mate Kiaying has successfully convinced him to shift their meeting spot, and the two eternal rivals now play far enough away for their end-of-evening traditions to only resemble a mere whisper in the distance.
