Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Become is awfully afraid of growing up, since he never wants to face an adult's problems. He's learned enough magic to freeze himself at his current age, which provides a temporary solution, but the knowledge that his spells might someday wear off keeps him studying at an almost frantic rate. In fact, his worry and excessive studying have given him an adult's frame of mind, but he remains oblivious to his situation and refuses to remove the spells.
