Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Varjokuva is a clever black dragon who often scares others with the evaluating look that lives in her eyes. She questions everyone and everything, and that's why she can be somewhat difficult to get along with. She is very independent, and doesn't need others to take care of her. She wants to find her own food and eat it by herself; she can't stand those caring dragons who keep on trying to aid their neighbours after an unsuccessful hunting. It has become a habit of Varjokuva to hunt only in the night. She always makes sure she gets back to the cave before the first sunrays reach the ground. Some dragons think she is afraid of light. Her name "Varjokuva" is a Finnish word meaning "silhouette".
