Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Wings Are Strange Things is forever young, forever curious, but he has trouble with his short-term memory. He's constantly wondering what those things on his back are and needing to be told that those are his wings. "But, then, why can't I fly" is his eternal response. Someone once jokingly suggested it was because he was a penguin, and now Wings spends his days looking for other penguins to play with.
