Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Birthday Surprise Winterstern was just as his name says; a birthday surprise. He was given to Digi on her birthday, much to her delight. He grew up among her other dragons, playing with her hatchlings and occasionally playing run-from-the-vampire, as Digi came to call the game, in which Birthday and the other hatchlings would slowly creep up on Digi's Vampire dragon, Vampira Lifedrinker, until she noticed them. Then they would all run away with squeals of delight and each find a hiding spot, and Vampira would usually turn around and try to ignore them.

When he grew up, Birthday fathered many dragons, watching over each of them until they left to live with another person. He liked to go with Digi when she delivered the eggs, taking pleasure in seeing the recipients' joy his eggs brought them.
