Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Usually, the first quality humans observes of a pygmy dragon hatchling is that they can easily hold the baby in their hand. Aee loves that—it makes being carried everywhere much easier. She says that since she's a "born daughter of legends", her humans must transport her comfortably wherever she wants to go. The humans have no issue with this, but the other young dragons despise her attitude.
