Vampire Dragons are members of the undead. They sustain themselves by drinking the blood of others. It is said that they are only “alive” at night, and seem dead or asleep during the day, as they cannot endure sunlight for long periods of time. Vampire Dragons can only reproduce by changing the eggs of other dragons, puncturing the shell with their fangs and injecting venom that kills the baby inside.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Sangsue has managed to win over nearly all of the other resident dragons despite the lead healer of the clan, Astaroth, calling him 'cursed' and 'evil' when he first hatched. Astaroth has constantly turned down Sangsue's offer of friendship which has depressed the vampire into almost giving up. Only his growing love of the misunderstood white keeps him coming back. When not chasing Astaroth, Sangsue loves to help the pink matron of the clan, Ragnarosa, with the hatchlings which has won him a friend in not only the matron, but also in her soul-mate, Ragnaroc. He tells the hatchlings of his travels before he leaves to feast, protects them once he returns and wakes them up in the morning before he disappears deep below the ground through one of the tunnels the vine dragons have carved deep into the nursery cave. Despite Ragnarosa trying to keep the hatchlings from disturbing the vampire's sleep, Sangsue has found the rogue hatchling or young dragon sleeping next to him come nightfall.
