This hatchling appears to be... dead?

Perhaps not. It seems to be active during the night.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Avery is the adopted son of Vladimir Vadim Valeray. Vladimir one day was strolling around at night with his daughter, Malena, and his owner when a  human stranger came across their path. Vladimir noticed the human was carrying a vampire hatchling with her. Malena took a liking to this strange human and Vladimir's owner made a deal. Malena can go with the stranger, and they get this vampire hatchling- who is now Avery. Malena now lives with the stranger and Avery lives with Vladimir's owner. Avery is a very shy little boy, and not the smartest vampire around, and he's very clumsy. Avery loves Vladimir and hopes one day, he'll have a mother and siblings so he can say he has a family.
