Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Beowulf is the first child of Xena. Like his mother he has a sense of adventure and right. Early in his life he left home to find fame as a dragon warrior who would aid humans in subduing threats and enemies. His life was rather routine as far as black dragons are concerned until he was called to a coastal town which was facing a "water demon". Beowulf came to the call and soon discovered it was not a demon but another dragon who had been caught in a tidal area she could not escape from after maturing. With the aid of his mother, Beowulf rescued the water dragon from her prison. In return for her rescue Sea Krait became his faithful mate.
