Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. Its eyes glow brightly at night, and it enjoys attacking insects and small animals.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Though the strange, roving band of frozen black hatchlings is usually treated as nothing but a rumor, it is most certainly real. The leader of the pack, usually going by Triumph, is a loud hatchling, happily bellowing out the song he and his fifty other companions were named after as he leads them to a new shelter. However, being no more than a hatchling, his voice rarely carries far (or is identifiable as male), and the few dragons who hear simply dismiss it as the howling of the wind, and the rustle of fifty one hatchlings as leaves, even in the dead of winter.
