Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Camulogene, along with Vishpala, joined the Goslanders after fleeing from the destruction of their own clan and territory after a prolonged battle with a rival clan. A ruthless warrior, Camulogene was enraged by their loss, and managed to avenge his fallen comrades by scorching the earth before he fled, rendering it useless to the invading clan. Upon chancing upon the Goslanders, he had planned to challenge the leader, Abby, and take control of the clan, but was startled out of his resolution by discovering Abby to be one of "the ancients," or what his previous clan had called the first of the shiny dragons whose eggs had mysteriously appeared amongst a choice few. Having been unaware there were others of her kind beyond her own clan, Abby was quick to welcome Camulogene, and recognizing his strengths, immediately gave him control over her warriors, from which Camulogene has molded an imposing fighting force.
