When Water Dragons mature, they lose the ability to survive on land, entering the water permanently. They are adept swimmers and eat whatever fish are in the lake they live in. They tend to inhabit the same lake for their entire lives, although a few live in the ocean and swim all over the world.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Nicasia was the second dragon to be taken by the Priest-Mages of Drekanos. With their city growing by Visascius power the rulers feared attacks by other sea powers. A water dragon, Nicasia, was therefore bound to defend the city's port. She was kept imprisoned by mage-wrought chains stretched across the harbour bed. On the day Visascius rebelled they were shattered by his earthquake; joyful, Nicasia surged out of the water causing an immense wave that drowned many of those attempting to flee and utterly destroyed Drekanos' fleet. Now she roams through all the worlds' seas, glorying in the freedom that was denied to her. Even so she returns regularly to that hated harbor to share her discoveries with Visascius, who will always leave his catacombs to meet her.
