Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It’s very light and enjoys bouncing all around.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Soon after he sprouted his wings, Krypton dared the other hatchlings of the clan to race him to the top of one of the tallest mountains on the edge of the territory. After many days of climbing and fluttering his new wings, Krypton made it to the top first; perhaps because none of the others were daft enough to follow him up that high. He then found himself in predicament, however, as the icy winds were too strong for his little wings and the mountainside too steep to maneuver back down without certain death. So on that mountain Krypton stayed, and there he remains to this day. The winters there are so cold that he is literally frozen as a hatchling, but Krypton has become well adjusted to the vicious mountain climate. He hunts birds and small mammals whenever possible, making sure to keep a stash for the colder winter months. He often sits among the scraggy cliffs and gazes across the misty horizon, wondering how much has changed since he became trapped at the mountain's peak.
