Dragons are creatures with nearly unlimited life spans. They can survive for long periods of time, and no one has found a dragon that has died of old age. Adolescence is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Once they hit adolescence, hatchlings change quickly, maturing to their full forms in only 2 years.
Dragons don’t communicate with each other verbally, but they will growl to scare off predators and frighten prey. Young dragons will emit an extremely high-pitched squeal when they are frightened. To communicate, they use telepathy with each other and to speak to other creatures.
Sunsong Amphipteres are an unusual breed. Due to light interference caused by their magical nature, they don’t seem to be affected by any ambient light source. However, when struck by direct sunlight, they shine a brilliant gold. They are playful and ever in flight; their ethereal and mysterious appearance and the fact that they are usually only seen at a distance have led many to believe they are a symbol of hope and good fortune.
This dragon was once heir to the noble house of Aetas--but his forefathers lost their names due to the betrayal committed by their human companion, and as such, he has been disgraced in turn. Abandoning his tainted family name, he has since taken to calling himself "Tattered," and travels in lands where his ancestor's sin is not so well known. It was during these travels that he came across another sunsong who took the name Aetas, a young and gentle creature who despite his name shared no blood with the previous holders of the title. Tattered couldn't help but be amused by this, and has since taken the boy in as something of a pupil, hoping that the kind natured youth will someday purge the taint surrounding the name Aetas, even if that name is no longer his own.
