Dorsal Dragons are so named because they have large fins along their backs that can be raised and lowered at will. They use these fins to regulate body temperature; they raise them to cool off when they become overheated. The bright colors on the fins double as a means of attracting mates.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

For a time, the Makoi Empire was renowned for their warbeasts, dragons stolen from their parents and trained to fight alongside humans in battle. One such dragon was Zadekon, who was quick to bond with his rider whose name has been lost to history with the destruction of the Makoi. Even though unable to fly, Zadekon made a name for himself and never lost a single battle, leading every army to victory. It wasn't until his rider was hit by a poisoned arrow at the last stand of Makoi his rampage could be stopped. Zadekon curled himself around his friend and comrade, and would not let anyone come near him, neither friend nor foe. Legend has it that Zadekon still watches over the battlegrounds, forever staying by the side of his rider, until they will be finally reunited.
