Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. Unlike the other hatchlings, this one hatched with wings.

And look! Its back legs have become a second set of wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

This skywing, sometimes called "PJ", often worries that his community of magic users will soon run out of mana to power their activities. While some adventurous dragons go on decadal trips to bring home more mana, he has looked toward the coast. He imagines that all over the world's oceans, there are enormous deposits, each with so much solid mana that it'd appear to be a crystalline mountain underwater. Occasionally, some would jut out of the water like an island, and maybe there'll even be a magic palm tree growing in the middle of the above-surface mana, in "classical" fashion. Since no one has traveled very far from the coast, PJ doesn't know if such mana islands exist. There can be large deposits of mana on land, so the idea is not unheard of. Most dragons think PJ's planned trip over the ocean will be a waste of time. No mana can form in such a huge mountain-sized hunk to stick out of the ocean. No mana's an island.
