Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Smokejumper is a young warrior-turned-field medic under the command of Ferus Prime. In order to curb his fiery attitude, Ferus assigned him the mentor of Ramrod, chief medical officer, to train as a field medic. Ferus hoped that his old ally could adjust the young dragon's behavior, as he was a huge danger to himself and others on the battlefield.

The overzealous Smokejumper seemed to have met his match when he first began training under Ramrod. The older medic disapproved of his larking, and clearly made his distaste known when he had the young dragon do meaningless tasks, such as organizing the medical equipment or searching for non-existent herbs. Smokejumper however remained energetic and hopeful that someday he would be allowed back onto the field.

His hopes were denied, and he was forced to focus on medical study and healing. Smokejumper still jumps at the bit whenever he gets wind of a fight, but he realizes his current duties and dutifully holds himself back. Sometimes.
