Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Suntooth is one of Phoenix's dragons. He was frozen just because all the other little hatchlings insisted on it, as they thought him very playful and enjoyable. Suntooth is a very smart hatchling who gets bored easily, and he likes to play with Tyranicus, Phoenix's mature sunset dragon. He wonders what it would be like to be a different kind of hatchling, as he only has energy in the evening. All the others say that it isn't much different, but he doesn't like to believe them.
