Pyralspite dragons are small, swift dragons that can breathe an intensely hot flame. They get their name from their resemblance to and affinity for garnets of the pyralspite family—they hoard such gems, preferring garnets that match their variant, and can tell the type of garnet from how it tastes. The orange variant is called Spessartine. These Pyralspites are more fun-loving and mellow than others, and are optimistic as a whole. Their preferred habitat is coastal areas.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Raimbaut Spessartine was born with a natural gift for sonnets and musical composition. No matter where he went or what he did, he could hear music in everything, even in the way the ground would shift under his feet when he walked. As a result, it was not unusual for him to break out into song without warning. At first, the other dragons in his clan were amused and even admired his gift. However, their opinions changed when Raimbaut Spessartine began to disrupt most of his clan's efforts in hunting for food. Raimbaut Spessartine would almost always break into song mid-hunt, scaring off potential prey. When their frustration and hunger grew past the breaking point, the other dragons sent him into exile. While in exile, Raimbaut Spessartine met and befriended Atalanta Pyrope, and he soon joined her on her journey. When they came across a castle where dragons and humans all coexisted peacefully, Raimbaut Spessartine became the castle's official troubadour.
