Dragons are creatures with nearly unlimited life spans. They can survive for long periods of time, and no one has found a dragon that has died of old age. Adolescence is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Once they hit adolescence, hatchlings change quickly, maturing to their full forms in only 2 years.

Dragons don’t communicate with each other verbally, but they will growl to scare off predators and frighten prey. Young dragons will emit an extremely high-pitched squeal when they are frightened. To communicate, they use telepathy with each other and to speak to other creatures.

It was previously believed that purple dragons were exclusively female, but this is not the case. Recent environmental shifts have revealed the existence of both genders of this breed. Female behavior is well known; they are primarily herbivores but will eat meat during mating season. On the other hand, very little is known about the behavior and habits of male purple dragons.

Violet Aiedail is the dragon of Rowan Azura. She hatched for the young girl during the events of Endless Chronicles, when the Varden and Galbatorix both struggled to obtain the large batch of Dragon Eggs found a few month after Eragon's appearance.

Violet and Rowan were neutral in the conflict, preferring to stay out of the way. They still saw their share of battles though, and when it became impossible to stay out of the way, they joined Neel and the new Order of Dragon Riders against the forces of Galbatorix.

Violet is a battle-hardened Veteran of many years of battle along with her rider, and knows well how to defend herself. Her mate is Zephyr Argetblod, her daughter Cascade Argetevarini.
