Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Ashen Waste is a young Black dragon. Like most of the other Black dragons in her clan, she lives where Izar stores the parchment and inks. Not much else is known about her except that she, like her friend Kat, writes creepy cryptic messages. She often is found writing the same things over and over again; "The Observer sees us all. The Operator will lead us to the ark." Like her best friend and adoptive older brother, Corvy Inks, she will also draw a few pictures, mostly of a hideous humanoid-dog-beast thing she calls "The Rake", who once attacked Corvy, back when he was considered "sane". She often avoids communication with the other dragons, and all of the hatchlings are a little bit afraid of her. She avoids humans, and whenever she sees anyone who wears sunglasses and has long hair, she will panic and claim to have seen "the Observer".
