Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

With a huge ego and a severe case of megalomania, Zatsu believes himself to be the purest and most ideal example of a Black dragon, or any dragon. It is no understatement that he thinks he is a gift from the gods bestowed on all of dragonkind, and he makes a dramatic and public example of thanking them. He sees all regular Black dragons and dragons of other breeds as inferiors, and thus does not associate with very many of his peers. Zatsu is not against taking other Alternate Black dragon hatchlings under his wing, whether they want him to or not, and he raises them to think themselves better than other breeds. When he does interact with others, Zatsu tends to prey on weaker females in order to spread his "impeccable" genes. However, he simply abandons the hatchlings and their mother if they are the "wrong" breed, or are not Alternate Blacks. According to other members of his clan, the only thing keeping this dragon alive is the fact that it is illegal to kill him.
