Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It glows brightly, and seems to prefer warm areas.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Bones of Flame is one of Phoenix's dragons. Despite the less-than-desirable treatment of her rather uninterested mother, Charred Beyond Repair, Bones is actually quite a friendly and loyal creature. She has never mastered the ability to fly and is consequently very envious of the Skywing and Swallowtail dragons that can fly for hours on end. Bones is also a subject of interest to Dawn's Little Blaze, who is otherwise somewhat rude and uninterested in 'girls.' At any rate, the red hatchling is still quite rude, but he seems to direct most of his attention to her.

Bones' closest friends are Berry Juice Smudge and Treefrog Feet, but she takes a better liking to Phoenix herself, often accompanying the immortal keeper into her study and perching on her desk or among her books, simply watching every move she makes. Unsurprisingly, she and Phoenix have become good friends, and she is also quite close to Charta de Vitam, the mute paper dragon that takes residence there for his own safety.
