Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Lorene likes to play with Heather of Deepwood in the forests near the cave, but like her, she can't hide very effectively. She has learned a tactic to camouflage herself; she spreads mud on her scales so she appears to be nothing more than a still tree. When Heather seems about to give up and is inches from the cloaked Lorene, the silver Tinsel yelps loudly and springs from her position, catching her friend totally off-guard.
