Whether Marthesine was ever a normal hatchling, or whether it is some fantastic construct, is a question worthy of debate. Either way, it has not aged in living record, and it affects the title of "Madame Marthesine, Patron of the Lost."

Related in her way to Nara-O, the Keeper of Secrets, Marthesine cares for those things that have been lost to the world. In her lair, accessible only through a tiny slit of a cave that even she must fold herself to climb through, are all the things she's found—things lost, things abandoned, and things unseen for ages past. It's said that Marthesine will trade for one of her lost things, but only if she feels she's getting the better part of the deal; many a bargainer has lost time at her table, only to awaken when the hatchling rasps out "Done," and wonder just what they exchanged for their newest treasure.
