Kyanite Pygmies are a feisty breed, always full of energy. Playfully ebullient, these tiny and elusive dragons like to chase after one another, darting in and out of small alcoves and other such hiding places. They often dig small burrows underneath large trees and nibble on the roots for sustenance. They rely on the towering oaks’ formidable trunks and vast immensity to hide them from predators, something their small size aids in. Kyanites also secrete a weak toxin when threatened, which further protects them from intruders. However, this poison is not strong enough to affect larger creatures, humans included.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Pygmy dragons are the smallest category of dragons, being on the same scale as domesticated animals. They are often found around concentrated populations of dragons, relying on their larger brethren to ward away potential predators and leave scraps. As such, the majority of a pygmy’s diet is scavenged. Due to their tiny size, pygmies do not breed with larger varieties of dragons.

While the Cloudtouched Thicket is high up in the mountains, it is by no means the highest locale in the area. That honor belongs to the aptly named High Peak, home to a kapok tree of unknown origin. When Whimsy hatched, the first thing she set eyes upon was High Peak looming over the thicket, and subsequently the massive lone tree that grew there. Whimsy spent her days as a hatchling frolicking around the thicket, but never lost sight of her goal. As she matured she began daily treks up the mountain, trying to reach a slightly higher point before heading home each day. She began the three day long hike up to the peak of the mountain once she felt comfortable with her abilities. It was trying for a dragon of her minute size and wingless form, but her persistence paid off when she was able to scrape away a tiny nest around the roots of the kapok tree. Nowadays, the Whimsy Hike is a rite of passage for every Pygmy of the Cloudtouched Thicket in order to live with the rest of their kind.
